OML #009 Building A “Career Portfolio”

A new way to craft your professional future with purpose and clarity.

Hello beautiful people! 🤘

I came across the term “Career Portfolio” from an HBR article and felt as if I finally found the right term to explain my career vision.

Let me share it with you.

Career Portfolio is a new way to craft your professional future in order to navigate our ever-changing world of work with purpose, clarity, and flexibility.

It simply means, instead of envisioning our career as the traditional, singular pursuit, we view it as a searching of fulfillment.

Here’s an example of my personal career portfolio.

  • Investor (ex-investment analyst)

  • Operations & Strategy (chief of staff)

  • Charity & Social Impact (founded an NGO)

  • Cleaning Crew (library janitor in university)

  • Service Crew (waiter at St Mary Stadium Football Club)

  • Educator (private tutoring)

Why create a “Career Portfolio”?

  • provides space and freedom to experiment and fail

  • integrates with life fulfillment (rather than believing it’s a privilege to have a career one enjoy)

  • connects the dot to envision a “life map”

Sold with this idea? Here’s how we can create a “Career Portfolio”.

1/ Write Down All Your Past Experiences (paid or volunteering)

While your portfolio can include traditional paid jobs, don’t limit it to that. Think bigger.

Your portfolio is created by you, rather than determined for you by someone else (like a bunch of hiring managers). It reflects your professional identity and potential. It includes your unique combination of skills, experiences, and talents that can be mixed, matched, and blended in different ways.

Your portfolio should also include experiences and capabilities that are customarily left off your resume, yet fundamentally make you, you.

2/ Brainstorm Experiences Will Excites You (what would you like to try in the future?)

It’s also crucial to look forward and figure how we can achieve our “next expedition”. And here’s a good news, our past experiences (portfolio) will definitely be helpful in achieving the next one.

Here are my “next expeditions” while I did my life mapping.

  • farmer → to live self-sustainably while produce foods in regenerative ways)

  • inventor → an outlet for my creativity and engineering skill

  • artist → another outlet of creativity

  • entrepreneur → to sustain my lifestyle while doing good

  • philanthropist → to continue my do good mantra

  • digital nomad → I need freedom!

  • and hopefully many more 🙂

Hope this inspires you to create your “career portfolio”.

All the best!
